Instrumented Soil Nail / Rock Bolt Pull Out Test

Soil nail and rock bolt instrumentation is used to evaluate the performance and effectiveness of slope stabilization systems. By installing Distributed Fibre Optic Strain Sensor along the soil nail or rock bolt, engineers can measure how loads are transferred and how the ground respond.

Objectives:

  • Obtain load distribution along the length of the soil nail / rock bolt.
  • Verify geotechnical design parameter such as unit skin friction.
  • Establish the load movement relationship

Benefits of DFOS in Soil Nail Pull Out Test:

  1. Continuous strain profile – DFOS measures strain along the full reinforcement, showing how load develops during pull out. It enables:
      • Monitor the strain distribution
      • Assessment of the debond zone
  2. Record localized anomalies – Fiber optic sensor able to identify abnormal strain profile, often caused by:
      • Mechanical couplers
      • Material heterogeneity or installation defect
  •
